The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis formed in 1912 from a federation of forty Protestant churches associated with the Indianapolis Ministerial Association. The executive secretaries and directors have been: Rev. Morton C. Pearson, Charles H. Winders, Ernest Evans, Dr. Howard J. Baumgartel, Lawrence T. Hosie, Rev. Robert S. Koenig, Paul McClure, and Rev. Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith. The first headquarters were in the downtown YMCA. The organization moved to North Meridian Street in 1956....

Its predecessor, the Indiana Sabbath School Union, founded ca. 1826, grew out of the Sunday school movement. Becker taught at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. The Indiana Interchurch Center began in 1960 as a joint home for the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis and the Indiana Council of Churches. It reorganized in 1963 as a comprehensive church center, and opened a new building in 1967 on ground obtained from Christian Theological Seminary.
